We Are Hiring - Kitchen Staff at Parsons Middle School

PHS Anatomy and Physiology students completed a lab on diffusion and osmosis Monday. For the lab, students used eggs, which have semi-permeable membranes. The membranes act as a barrier that water can move across based on concentration gradients, demonstrating the principles of osmosis (a type of diffusion), where water moves from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. Students placed eggs in solutions of vinegar, and water, dark corn syrup or light corn syrup and studied how the eggs reacted. The shells dissolve with the vinegar, leaving the membrane. The eggs then swelled as they absorbed water through osmosis, or shrank as water moved out of the egg to balance the concentration levels on either side of the membrane.
